The Low Down On Submersible Pumps

Submersible pumps are devices that are used in certain applications, especially installations where the pump needs to be lowered down into deep holes or underwater. Unlike other pumps these pumps push water to the surface as opposed to pulling water to the surface. A submersible pump has a motor in a tightly sealed unit, making it safe to submerge the pump in liquid.

What keeps the motor from getting wet is an hermetic seal. It is important to keep liquids away from the motor, as should the motor get wet it is likely to cause a short circuit and expensive damage. The motor can be connected to a pipe, a flexible hose or lowered to a coupling. The motor is then fed power through cables.

There are a number of applications in which submersible pumps are used in both the industrial and commercial sectors such as; drainage, slurry pumping, fire fighting, sewage pumping, irrigation, offshore drilling rigs, oil wells and industrial water extractions.

The metals used to make submersible pumps are either chrome, polymers or stainless steel.

How they work

Submersible pumps are usually multi-stage centrifugal pumps that operate in a vertical position and works by lowering the flowing pressure at the bottom of the shaft in which the pump rests. The pump shaft is joined to the protector by a coupling. Fluids then enter the pump through an intake screen and are pushed to the surface, as opposed to jet pumps that pull liquids. The motors used in the manufacturing of submersible pumps can function under high pressure as well as high temperatures.

There are different types of submersible pumps used for different types of liquids. Generally speaking combustible liquids will require a different type of pump than those pumps used for non combustible liquids. The reason for this is that certain pumps could ignite combustible liquids.

Pumps are also differentiated by their strengths in energy use and their pumping speeds. Pumps that are more deeply submerged require stronger pumps in order to function properly due to increased pressure.
